While true orthodontic emergencies are rare, they can happen—and when they do, the team at Smileworks Orthodontics is here for you. If you’re experiencing severe discomfort or if an appliance is broken and causing pain, don’t wait. Call our office right away at (703) 383-0090. We’ll schedule an appointment with Dr. Hussaini as soon as possible to get you back on track.

When to Call Us Immediately:

• Significant pain or swelling in the gums, mouth, or face
• Broken wires or brackets causing injury or intense discomfort
• Loose appliances poking or shifting
• Bent or damaged headgear components

Even if you’re able to temporarily relieve the issue, it’s important to contact our office for a proper fix. Delaying repairs can interfere with your treatment progress.

Managing Minor Issues at Home

Some minor issues can be managed temporarily with a few simple tips:

• Loose Bracket or Band: If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax if it’s irritating your cheek. If it comes off completely, keep it safe and bring it to your appointment.
• Poking Wire: Gently push the wire back with a cotton swab or pencil eraser or cover it with wax to reduce irritation.
• Soreness After Adjustments: This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. Use warm saltwater rinses and over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

Headgear Discomfort or Damage

Discomfort from headgear can occur if it’s not worn as prescribed. Be sure to follow Dr. Hussaini’s instructions exactly—often, discomfort improves with consistent use. If the facebow becomes bent or damaged in any way, call our office immediately. Continuing to wear damaged headgear can affect your treatment and may cause harm.
